Tuesday 25th June – walk ***** National Trust Cissbury Ring – sunny
periods
What a night in our little VW campervan on our raised individual parking
space at the bottom of Cissbury Ring just above Findon near Worthing, as
the rain didn’t stop! Relaxing hour or so reading and looking at the
lovely scenery here in the middle of the South Downs with yellow hammers
flitting about and the farmer rounding up a large flock of sheep to drive
them to another field! Our original plan was to walk to the top of the ring
and then drive to the Wey and Arun canal but as it was so nice here, we
decided to stay for the day. Soon after breakfast a steady stream of young
ladies started to arrive to meet their teacher waiting for them at their
check point at the bottom of the ring looking hot and bothered carrying a
huge rucksack. They must be doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award and actually
looked anything but impressed! At about eleven part one of our adventure
started as we left the van and started the climb to the top of the
6000-year-old Cissbury Ring a huge Neolithic hill fort and an important
flint mining area in Sussex. As you enter the gate to the site which
advises of grazing ponies you are soon very impressed by the large earth
embankment which we walked right around and is massive - 1.15 miles in
total offering stunning views of rolling English countryside one side and
the built up seaside resorts of Worthing to Brighton the other. The groups
of girls were making their way to the top with each group seemingly taking
a different route, no wonder they get lost so easily! There were a few gaps
in the embankment which must have been wooden gateways and this must have
been a large community in years past. If you close your eyes you can
almost imagine what it was like back then! We had some nice chat with the
girls telling us of their rainy night under canvas and carrying the large
rucksacks and continually getting lost, youngsters today just can’t
survive without their mobile phones! But to be fair the sun was now coming
out and it was very hot and we were glad not to be carrying a weighty
rucksack! After taking the long easy route up we walked through the centre
of the ring and down the steep way back to the van. Then while Mag makes a
picnic, I take the bikes off for the second part of our adventure:)
